ActivTest Version 6 Upgrades

During 2006, we launched Version 6 of the ActivTest system.  This introduced a number of improvements and new features, the most important of which are listed below.  We are in the process of upgrading all our customers and this takes time, but this process must be completed in the next three months, in order that all test centres are ready for delivery of the new Syllabus 4.5 tests.  Some of you already have Version 6 – certainly all those of you delivering e-Citizen and e-type tests will have it already.  There are still a number of our ECDL customers who are continuing with Version 4.

 

Here are the most important of the new features that Version 6 has introduced:-

  • Automatic exam recovery in the event of a system crash. If your exam PC should fail during an exam you can re-boot the machine and the candidate can continue from exactly the same point in the test with no scores or time being lost.

  • Automatic local storage of exam results. If your Internet connection should fail at the end of an exam, the results are stored locally in an encrypted form and are automatically sent back to the server when connectivity has been resumed.

  • Browser based administration system. You can now register candidates, queue exams and view results from ANY machine that has Web access and is running Microsoft Internet Explorer.  You do not even need to be in the test centre!  There is no need to install any software for the day-to-day administration tasks. The client-based version of the Administration System remains available for those who wish to carry on with it rather than change.

  • Group allocation of exams.  You can select a group of candidates and queue them all for exams in a single action.

  • Faster feedback of results data to the BCS. Because we now dispatch registration and results data to the BCS on a more regular basis with Version 6, your candidates can get their certificates more quickly than ever.

  • Access to a wider range of our Certification Programmes.  Your Version 6 ActivTest system can deliver exams and assessments for both ECDL and e-Citizen certifications and the new keyboard skills certification from the BCS,
    ‘e-type’.

To achieve these valuable enhancements, Activ is, as usual, leading the way with its choice of technology. Version 6 of the ActivTest system makes use of Microsoft's .NET version 2.0.  This is installed by default on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and is offered as an option for other operating systems from the Windows Update site.  You will need to ensure that your systems include this version of Microsoft .NET when you upgrade to Version 6 of ActivTest.  If it is installed you will see it listed in the “Add/Remove” programs section of “Control Panel”. However, do not uninstall Microsoft .NET 1.0 or 1.1 from your PCs.

What Next?

We will be in touch soon to agree a date for your upgrade, but we ask in the meantime that you check your systems as soon as possible and load Microsoft .NET 2.0 if necessary.
