e-Citizen ... and its many uses

e-Citizen is perhaps one of the less familiar qualifications in the BCS portfolio.  Many seem to think that it only teaches students how to use online services, such as banking, shopping and paying bills.  It does - but there is a lot more to the qualification.  You could regard it as an ‘entry-level’ course that introduces students to using a PC.  It is ideal as a precursor to ECDL….or as an alternative to ECDL for those students who do not want to learn the wider, more in-depth use of application software.

Those Centres that have successfully sold e-Citizen to their customers have aimed it at groups such as those who do not use a PC at work but require one for home, and senior citizens eager to find out what the Internet can do for them.  ‘Women returners’, who are returning back to the work environment following a career break whilst bringing up a family, are also a popular target group.

The qualification is closely aligned to the current requirements for ‘e-Government’, which aims to encourage people to gain the skills required to conduct much of their day-to-day ‘life administration’ online.

The e-Citizen Syllabus covers topics such as:-

  • Switching the PC on and off, using the mouse etc

  • Working with files

  • Using applications such as word processing

  • Using a browser

  • Sending and receiving e-mails

  • Introduction to the internet

  • Searching the internet and accessing content

  • Using online services

For those centres registered as LSC providers, e-Citizen qualifies for LSC funding. The BCS has been successful in mapping the e-Citizen programme to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Entry Level.  e-Citizen has also been accepted as a 30 guided-learning hour course with the LSC programme weighting set at A – 1.00. The Learning Aim Reference is: 10044218.

Please visit the BCS Approved Centre Forum >>>> to check the current LSC funding information for e-Citizen.

To gain the qualification, Candidates must pass a single automated test. e-Citizen can only be accredited using Automated Testing, and Activ was the first provider of Automated Testing Software for the qualification back in November 2004.  We also provide ECDL Foundation-approved computer-based e-Citizen courseware that is tailored specifically for the needs of those who are new to computers.

The e-Citizen courses are now well established in many BCS Test Centres.  Along with the e-type keyboard skills qualification and ECDL/IT User qualification, selecting e-Citizen provides a smooth progression to acquire the necessary skills in IT for the workplace and life in general.
